How Parents Can Help
1) Let your son/daughter know that doing well in school is important.
Don't excuse them from doing well in math. We have several levels
of math at High Point to ensure that all students can succeed if they try.
2) Provide a quiet place to do homework. Set aside some
time each evening when your son or daughter is expected to do homework
- no television, no phone calls.
3) Organization is an important factor in success in math.
Ask to see you son's/daughter's notebook. There should be class notes
and sample problems worked out neatly. Supplementary materials should
be kept neatly in a notebook or folder. Homework should be in a notebook,
not on miscellaneous pieces of paper put in various books or folders.
4) Provide a "planner" for your son or daughter in which they are
to write down assignments. Generally, students will have homework
several times a week. Ask to see your son's/daughter's homework.
They should have work neatly shown, not just answers. Encourage them
to look back at their class notes if they don't know how to do a problem.
Contact the teacher if your son or daughter never has homework.
5) Ask your son or daughter when they are having a quiz or test.
Usually they are announced several days in advance. Offer to help
them to study by writing down problems from review sheets, previous quizzes,
or homework for them to do as practice. Have them check their answers.
Often review worksheets are given, which are similar to the test.
If the students can do those problems, they will do well on the test.
6) Encourage you son or daughter to come for help if they are having
difficulty. All teachers are available for help after school.
There is a 3:30 late bus for students to take home. If students are
in sports, coaches will excuse them from practice time with a note from
their teacher.
7) If you have any questions or concerns about your son's or daughter's
math class, contact the teacher.
