State Testing Information
and Practice Material

All students graduating from a public high
school in New Jersey must pass the New Jersey State Test, the High School
Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). It is first taken in the Spring of the studnet's
Junior year in high school. The test has four clusters.
1) Number Sense: Concepts & Applications
2) Spatial Sense & Geometry
3) Data Analysis, Probability, Statistics,
& Discrete Math
4) Patterns, Functions, & Algebra
Juniors will take this test in reading, mathematics, and writing on March 2, 3, and 4, 2004. The make up days are March 9, 10, and 11, 2004. In order to prepare students for this test, we have integrated the HSPA proficiencies into all our courses. We have also prepared HSPA review worksheets, which students do throughout the year. Students in Integrated Math have an HSPA workbook which they use on a regular basis.
Here are the proficiencies for each section

Cluster I: Number Sense: Concepts and
Applications
The student should have an understanding of:

1) A fraction is equivalent to 3/8. The sum of the numerator and denominator is 33. What is the fraction?
2) A printer charges 4.2 cents per copy for a standard size original. There is an additional charge of one-half cent for each copy on colored paper. How much would you pay for 100 copies of an original on white paper and 100 copies on blue paper?
3) Every Monday, at Capri Pizza, lucky customers
can get free slices of pizza and free soda. Every 10th customer gets
a free plain slice of pizza and every 12th customer gets a free cup of
soda. On the first Monday of March, Capri pizza had 211 customers.
a) How many free pizza slices were given away?
How many cups of soda were given away?
b) When Jackie came to Capri Pizza, the owner
told her that she was the first person to get both free items (the free
slice of pizza and the free soda). What number customer must Jackie
have been? How many other customers (from the 211 customers) would
also get both free items?
c) Suppose the owner also decides to give
away free bags of potato chips to every 7th customer. Would any of
the 211 customers be lucky enough to get all three free items? Explain.
