Mathematics Department Practical Program Descriptions
updated for 04-05 school year 6/2/2004
PRACTICAL/BSI PROGRAM 1.00
Grade 9: Integrated Math 1 P
Grade 10: Integrated Math 2 P
Grade 11: Integrated Math 3P
Grade 12: Algebra 1 M
(All classes use the Scientific Calculator, Texas Instrument TI30IIX)
The Practical program is designed to meet the needs of students who have been identified by GEPA scores, HSPA scores or a local assessment as in need of specific support to prepare for the HSPA or who need to strengthen their skills before taking Algebra 1. The topics in these courses are coordinated with the clusters on the Grade 11 New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). Credits for these courses fulfill graduation requirements. Students who score below the state standard on the GEPA in eighth grade must take Integrated Math 1. Ninth grade students who score below an established local standard on a locally prepared test given in the spring must take Integrated Math 2 the following year. They may also continue in their regular math program if it fits in their schedule. Students in the tenth grade who score below an established local standard on a locally prepared test given in the spring must take Integrated Math 3 the following year. They may continue in their regular math program if it fits in their schedule. If it is determined that any 11th or 12th grade students need more intensive preparation for the HSPA, a tutoring program will be established. Students are required to attend.
Topics studied in Integrated Math are number sense, concepts and applications, spatial sense and geometry, data analysis, probability and statistics, discrete math, patterns, functions and algebra. There is an emphasis on problem solving. Calculators are used both to explore concepts and solve problems. Since all three years are vital to prepare students for the HSPA, students who fail Integrated Math 1 should schedule both Integrated Math 1 and Integrated Math 2 the following year. Students who fail Integrated Math 2 should schedule Integrated Math 2 and Integrated 3 the following year. It is important that all students in the practical level are in Integrated Math III the year they are taking the HSPA.
Students who are placed in Integrated Math because they did not meet
standards on state or locally prepared tests, may test out of the program
the following year by meeting established standards on a locally prepared
test. It is recommended that students have at least a "B" average and teacher
recommendation to move from the Integrated Math program to Algebra 1 Modified.
All students who plan to continue their education beyond high school should
complete Algebra 1 Modified prior to graduation.
