What is Service Learning?  Service-learning is a method of teaching that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools or communities through careful integration with established curricula.

            Students enrolled in College Preparatory Biology A at High Point Regional High School are required to complete 20 hours of community service. The students must relate this service to the biology topics that we will cover in class. Please indicate that your organization will provide the following student with the opportunity to complete their hours. The students are allowed to split their hours between two organizations with prior approval from their teacher. The project requires that 10 hours are completed by March and all of the hours are completed by May. Thank you for taking a few minutes to fill out the following information about your organization. First Marking Period

Initial Proposal and Organization Approval

October 9, 2009

The initial proposal will be given to your teacher on the above date on the worksheet provided.  This proposal will be worth 25 points towards your first marking period grade.

 

Second Marking Period

Introduction

Friday, December 4, 2009

The introduction to your service learning project will be handed in to your teacher for review. The introduction rough draft will be worth 25 points toward your second marking period grade.

 

Third Marking Period

Bioconnect

and

Log Entries of your first 10 hours of service

Friday, March 5th, 2010

The bioconnect will be handed in to your teacher for review. This will be worth 25 points.  Also it is expected that 10 hours of your service learning hours will be complete by this date.  Therefore, your log entries up until this date will also be handed in for review.  Your log entries will be worth 25 points, for a total of 50 points on your third marking period grade.

 

Fourth Marking Period

Final Service Learning Project Submission

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

It is expected that on the above date you will hand in your FINAL introduction, your bioconnect, ALL of your log entries documenting your 20 hours of service that you completed, your pictures, your letter of verification and your summary.  There will be NO projects excepted late!  This final submission will be worth 200 points toward your fourth marking period grade!!!

 

***Submission of the Final Service Project is a requirement for this course.  Failure to turn in a project will result in a permanent incomplete for the course. 

 

 

 

Service Learning Project: Project Details

 

1.         Introduction - Minimum 1 page typed – double spaced – 12 font

                        a. Describe the organization in detail that you will be

                            volunteering for.  Describe its history, location, workers etc.

                        b. Explain the job(s) that you will specifically doing in your project.

 

2.         Bio Connect - Minimum 1 page typed – double spaced – 12 font

                        a. How does this project relate to our class?

                        b. What chapters in our book does this refer to?

                        c. Cite specific examples from the project to our class.

 

3.         Log Book Entry Format- Minimum 1 page typed – double spaced – 12 font

For each log book entry, please write a descriptive paragraph with a detailed recount of what you did during your time. 

                        Answer these questions:

                                    a. Who did you meet or work with?

                                    b. What did you do?

                                    c. Where did you do your work?

                                    d. Why did you need to do this?

                                    e. How long did it take you to complete?

 

4.         Hours – Minimum of 20 hours over the course of the year.

 

5.         Pictures

                        Minimum of 15 from different days that you volunteered.  Label them                as to who is in the pictures and describe what you are doing. You do have to be   

            some of the pictures to prove that you were there.

 

6.         Letter of Verification

                        On company stationary, from a supervising individual, telling what                                 you did and how long you did it for.

 

7.         Summary - Minimum 1 page typed - double spaced – 12 font

                        A reflective narrative on:

                                    a. The advantages of community service

                                    b. Your personal gains from volunteering

                                    c. How your organization benefited from your volunteering

                                    d. Any suggestions for improvement for future projects
