Each student is assigned a freshman counselor upon entering. A cumulative folder of information is maintained in the guidance office. This folder contains information from previous schools, report cards, test scores, progress reports, and personal data. Parents and students are encouraged to meet with counselors to discuss this information. The law specifically designates those people who have access to these files. It is outlined below:
• The parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a student under the age of 18,
• The student who has the written permission of the parent(s) or guardian(s),
• Students over the age of 18,
• Parent(s) or guardian(s) of students over the age of 18 who have written permission of the student, except that the parent(s) or guardian(s) shall have access without consent of the pupil as long as the pupil is financially dependent upon the parent(s) or guardian(s) and is enrolled in the public school system.
Upon graduation or departure of the student from the school system, the parent or adult student shall be entitled to receive a copy of the entire student record upon request.
Conferences with the counselor may be arranged at the request of the student, counselor, teacher, or the parent/guardian.
Students will schedule the following year courses through the Genesis Portal. There are several parameters that must be followed:
The final course schedule agreed upon prior to the start of school is considered to be an agreement between the school, student and parent. After the first day of school, there will be no schedule changes.
No student will be allowed to schedule fewer than 35 periods per week in class.
Students in grade 12 may drop a scheduled study hall in order to become a Teacher Assistant (TA). The position of Teacher Assistant is offered as a privilege to students in good academic standing. TA’s who experience academic, attendance, or discipline issues may be removed from the position. Students may not drop a course in order to become a TA.
To be eligible for graduation, a student must meet all the criteria established by the Board of Education. This includes earning a minimum of 135 credits, completing all required courses, completing the community service requirement and complying with the attendance policy. Failure to meet any of the above will result in the student not taking part in the graduation ceremony. The student may receive his or her diploma at the end of the summer upon completion of summer school for failed courses or the make-up program for attendance. Students are ranked according to their cumulative weighted grade point average (GPA). In order for a student’s GPA to be counted toward class rank, the student must have enrolled at High Point Regional High School by the 2nd Semester of their junior year.. Any student with an Incomplete (I) after July 31st prior to beginning senior year will not be included in the official class rank until mid year rank is calculated. Any student with an Incomplete (I) 10 days after mid year grades are due will not be included in the official mid year rank. Students attending a foreign exchange program or alternate placement will not have those grades factored into the GPA/Class Rank and are not able to be included in class rank until they have completed two consecutive years at High Point. Unofficial rank list will be generated at the end of freshman and sophomore years.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Selection of the graduating class Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be done ten days after the completion of the 3rd marking period.
The grades received in all courses are included in the computation to determine eligibility for the Honor Roll. The student’s unweighted GPA will be calculated for each marking period. The specific criteria to earn Honor Roll recognition is:
High Honor Roll: An unweighted grade point average between 92-100 with no grade lower than a 70, noincompletes (I).
In order to be eligible for any fall or winter extra-curricular activity and/or interscholastic athletic program at High Point, students must have earned thirty credits in the previous academic year. Eligibility for continued participation in spring extra-curricular activities and/or spring interscholastic athletic programs is reviewed after the first semester. At the time of review, students must be passing six classes totaling a minimum of thirty credits for the year. Please note that any lab science is a 6 credit course. Ineligible status remains in effect for a full semester.
Honor Roll: An unweighted grade point average between 85-91 with no grade lower than a 70, no incompletes (I).
HP’s College Application Process
In order to ensure a smooth procedure for seniors when submitting college applications, we would appreciate the following items adhered to:
Transcript Request Forms - must be completed and submitted to the guidance office for processing. The transcript request form is available online and in the guidance office.
College Applications - All applications are to be completed through Naviance.
Supplemental documentation may include the following: activities resume, essay, letters of recommendation or evaluation forms from faculty, community leaders, employers, etc. and college application fee. All of the documentation provided by the student will be maintained by the guidance counselor in a college file.
Timelines and deadlines are the responsibility of the student. Applications require ten school days for processing. Colleges in some cases will refuse to process your application if materials are not in by the deadline. Students must adhere to the ten days required for processing.

Homework requests are processed in the Guidance Office. Parents must call the extension 1252 prior to 9:00 a.m. in order to receive assignments by the close of the next school day. Homework assignments will be located in the guidance office which will remain open until 3:30 p.m. for your convenience.
Working papers are available in the Guidance Office for students seeking employment.
